Shakespeare’s Lady Macbeth had blood on her hands and her feverish attempts couldn't wash it away. A murder had taken place, and the stain of guilt was great. Her anxious attempt to be cleansed didn't work, and neither will our vain attempts. You can stop trying to religiously wash the blood from your hands, because the blood of another makes you clean.
